Morton "Mort" Samuel Lindner

Emblem

Morton S. Lindner, beloved husband, father, teacher, and firefighter, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2026, at the age of 93, with his daughter Tamara at his side.

Morton was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and raised in Long Branch by his parents, Yetta and Morris; it was a place he loved and returned to throughout his life. In 1975 he settled in Martinez, Georgia, just outside Augusta, which he called home for the next five decades.

He led a life of service in every chapter. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, and then gave more than 24 years to teaching at Murphey Middle School in Augusta, where generations of students knew him affectionately as “Mr. B.” He was a volunteer firefighter with Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue for 34 years, and during his 20+ years on the Fire Department Board of Trustees, he helped grow the organization from a one-million to a nine-million-dollar corporation. He remained active in the Georgia Association of Educators into his nineties, and was a devoted member of the Masons, the Lions Club, and the German Friendship Club.

Behind all of it stood Hildegard, whom he married in 1969. His partner of almost 57 years, she was the heart and engine of their home, raising their children, running the household, and supporting his work and his community life at every turn.

Those who knew Morton will remember the man more than the résumé. He told it exactly like it was, respectfully but without pretense, and he had a rare gift for keeping perspective, for knowing what mattered and what didn’t. He was generous on principle, believing that when you have, you give. He saw completely past the things that divide people, collecting friends from every walk of life and bringing them together at parties that had no business working and worked anyway. He almost always had a smile on his face and a joke ready.

Morton is survived by his loving wife, Hildegard Lindner; their daughters, Bianca Lindner and Tamara Lindner (and her husband, Nick Grove); and his children Deborah Doggett and Nick Lindner.

The family will receive friends for visitation at Poteet Funeral Home on Thursday, August 13, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at Poteet’s on Friday, August 14, at 2:00 p.m., with a reception to follow at 7025 Evans Town Center Blvd.
