Michael Herman Newman, 74, died on June 19, 2026 of Alzheimer’s disease. He was married 53 years to Sherry Newman and had 3 sons, Christopher (Angie), Jamie Nicholas, and Stephen (Sarah). He also left behind seven grandsons: Noah, David, Jaden, Gabriel, Kellan, Reese, and Micah. He was the son of the late Archie Sr and Virginia Newman. He had two brothers, the late Archie Jr, and Ricky, along with two sisters Suzanne Kneece and Connie Schmidt.
He was protective of his wife and lead his family with impeccable integrity. He exemplified a life of sacrifice and service. He coached and led hundreds of kids from the 70s and 80s to play hard, play fair and never, ever give up!
Michael graduated in 1969 from the Academy of Richmond County and earned his Associate degree in electronics from Augusta Tech. He worked with Western Electric, then Burroughs Corporation and finally had a 48 year career with Southern Bell/BellSouth/AT&T.
Michael was baptized at Woodlawn UMC, was very active at Marvin UMC, Wesley UMC and finally attended Warren Church Belvedere Campus. He lived out his faith by helping anyone in need.
Our family would like to thank Akilah Tucker and Sheila Dixon from Focus on You Services for their excellent home health care along with Sarah and Delores at Madison Heights for their compassionate, loving care during his final weeks. A special thanks to Sammy Edwards for continuing to be a great friend all the way to the end and bringing him to the Momentum Men’s breakfast on Thursdays. It was the highlight of his week.
A celebration of life will be held at Warren Augusta Worship Center on Friday, June 26, 2026. There will be a visitation for the family to receive friends and loved ones at 2 with memorial service following at 3.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to either Tunnels to Towers (t2t.org) or Warren Belvedere Renovation Fund (warren.church/give).
