Michael “Gary” Goodwin, born July 9, 1962, entered into eternal rest on September 28, 2026, at the age of 64.
Gary was a proud father, grandfather, partner, brother, uncle, son, and friend. He loved his family deeply and treasured the many friendships he made throughout his life. A hardworking man through and through, Gary believed in showing up, giving his best, and taking care of the people he loved.
Gary’s competitive spirit began early. He played football throughout high school and later kept that competitive edge alive by competing in lineman rodeos. He was also an avid golfer and a member of Forest Hills Golf Club, where he could often be found enjoying a round of golf. He also enjoyed working the scoreboard on Hole No. 6 during the Masters Tournament.
Gary graduated from South Gwinnett High School class of 1980. He then proudly served his country for 4 years in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he began a long and dedicated career with Georgia Power, retiring after an incredible 40 years of service. He started as a Lineman and worked his way up to Trouble Supervisor and Retired as Lighting Service coordinator. His strong work ethic was one of the qualities that defined him throughout his life.
When he wasn’t working, Gary enjoyed the things that made life good: spending time with family and friends, playing golf, cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs, Atlanta Falcons, and Atlanta Braves, and spending time at the beach. He also had a love for a new truck and was always happiest when there was a new one sitting in the driveway.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, William “Bill” Goodwin and Betty Goodwin.
He is survived by his daughters, Morgan (Will) Johnson and Meghan Goodwin; his grandchildren, Charley, Carter, and Collin Johnson; his partner, Gina Ruark; his brother, Mark (Holly) Goodwin; and his nephews, Mason and Parker Goodwin.
Gary leaves behind far more than the accomplishments of a life well lived. He leaves behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, friendships, and memories with the people he loved most. He will be remembered for his unwavering work ethic, his loyalty, his competitive spirit, his love for his family and friends, and his appreciation for the simple things in life. His presence will be deeply missed, but the memories he created and the love he shared will remain with his family and friends for years to come.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation at 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October 5, 2026, from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907 (706) 364-8484. Please sign the guestbook at www.thomaspoteet.com
