Martha Ann Scott (Garrahan)

Augusta, GA – Martha Ann Scott (Garrahan) was born in Waltham, MA, the second of five children of James and Norma Garrahan. Neat, conscientious, and caring from the start, she spent her school years in Waltham, meeting David Scott, her husband-to-be, in their 8th grade homeroom class.

Martha attended Framingham State College (now University) where she earned her BS in Elementary Education. She cherished her years there, regularly returning for class reunions into her 70s. After college she taught first grade. She and David wed two years later and moved to Indianapolis, IN for David’s graduate school program. Martha taught there as well until their family grew to three and then to four. They all moved to Madison, WI a few years later.

When David’s career brought the family to Augusta, Martha found a home away from home at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, where she served in numerous roles. She was a communion minister for decades and assisted in preparing the Senior Citizens luncheon long after she qualified for AARP. Most notably, in 1985, she became the first female Parish Council president. Ever an educator, she also served as Religious Education Director and later co-led the Right of Christian Initiation of Adults program, shepherding many into the faith. The work closest to her heart, though, was that of the Consolation Ministry, serving individuals who recently lost a loved one. Martha started the Ministry in 2001, assisting in the planning of countless funerals and easing families’ burdens with her wisdom, organization, and, most importantly, kindness. In 2002 she was awarded the Bishop Gartland Recognition of Service for the Diocese of Savannah.

Martha’s service was not limited to the church. She held leadership roles in the Medical College of Georgia’s Faculty and Spouse Club, Augusta Women’s Club, and the Greenbrier Garden Club. She was a tireless supporter of the public schools her daughters attended, serving as a PTA officer, volunteer substitute, and frequent chaperone.

Martha will be remembered for her steadfast devotion to her family, friends, and church as well as her kind and loving spirit. She was an incredible hostess, cook, correspondent, leader, teacher, wife, and mother, dedicated to service in all its many forms. She loved the quote “To love another person is to see the face of God” from the musical Les Miserables and lived it throughout her life.

She is predeceased by her parents James and Norma Garrahan and siblings Roberta Pennachio, Joseph Garrahan, and Daniel Garrahan. She is survived by her husband of 62 years David, sister Judith (Francis) Michienzi, daughters Jennifer (Thomas) Bovitz, Heather (Carl) Westman, and Rebecca Scott (Neal Racioppo), and grandchildren Chandler (Kellyann) Bovitz, Max Bovitz, Nicole Bovitz, Thomas (Elizabeth) Bovitz, Charlotte Racioppo, Kate Westman, and Scott Westman.

A vigil will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026 at 5:30 p.m., and the family will receive friends following the service. The funeral mass is at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 31, 2026. Both will occur at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, 1420 Monte Sano Ave, Augusta, GA 30904.
