Maria Esther Nehlsen

Evans, GA — Maria Esther Nehlsen, 91, entered into rest on Tuesday, October 27, 2026. She was the loving wife of the late Alwin Nehlsen.

Maria will be remembered for her love of family and friends, her spunky spirit, and the joy she found in the simple pleasures of life. Her family was her greatest treasure and she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She shared a special bond with her beloved husband, Alwin, who preceded her in death. Together they loved traveling, especially taking cruises, and enjoyed making memories and experiencing life side by side.

Maria took great pride in being a stay-at-home mom and caring for her family. She genuinely loved cooking, keeping her home clean and beautiful, and creating a welcoming place for the people she loved. She had a remarkable green thumb and a passion for plants and gardening. She was also an avid bowler, with a great love for the sport.

In addition to her love of family, Maria treasured the friendships she built throughout her life. Her Wednesday lunches with her beloved “Lunch Bunch” friends were a special tradition she looked forward to and cherished.

Family members include her sons: Michael Nehlsen (Renee) and Ralph Nehlsen; grandchildren: Maggie Nehlsen (Emily), Audrey Nehlsen, Bradley Burton (Jenna), Rebecca Burton, Alexandria Burton, Annah Burton, Timothy Burton (Brittany); and great-grandchildren: Winslow Nehlsen, Kinsley Burton, Caden Burton, Hayes Burton, Brooks Burton, and Olivia Burton.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Road, Augusta, GA 30907. Visitation will be held an hour prior at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Limbs for Life Foundation.
