Entered into rest on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Mr. Macon W. “Mike” Stewart, 74, loving husband of the late Deborah Chavel Stewart, passed away unexpectedly leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and devotion to his family.
Mike married his high school sweetheart, Deborah Chavel Stewart on February 18th, 1978. Deborah was his one and only true love, and her death last year left him completely heartbroken.
Mike was a native and lifelong resident of Augusta. He was a 1971 graduate of the Academy of Richmond County. In 1973 Mike followed in his father’s footsteps and began working for the Augusta Fire Department, working at Engine Company Number 8. In 1979 Mike co-founded Augusta Automatic Fire Systems. For over 20 years he worked tirelessly to make the company one of the largest fire equipment companies in the southeast. Through years of dedication and hard work, he successfully retired following the company sale in 1999.
After retiring, Mike spent most of his time at his place on the lake. He loved spending time fishing with his family and friends. After a great day on the lake, Mike loved hosting fish fries for his family and friends. Mike was a longtime member and past president of the Augusta Friendship Benevolent Association. He poured his heart and soul into the AFBA to make sure he left it better for the next generation to enjoy just like he did.
Mike’s greatest joy was spending time with his two grandboys. Fun days on the boat teaching them how to fish or crazy golf cart rides were what he enjoyed most. To his grandsons, Mike was a hero, he shaped their young lives with his quiet wisdom that they will carry forever.
Family members include his loving sons: Kevin Stewart, Nathan Stewart (Katie); sister: Carol Hardy (Vince); Cousins: Deanna Brown, (Chris); Madeline Braswell; grandsons: Macon Stewart and Ash Stewart; nephew: Jody Johnson;
In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his father, Charles Stewart and his mother Bernice Stewart.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 11 AM in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Thurman Norville officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home. To celebrate Mike’s life and love for fishing and the outdoors, we kindly invite you to wear a favorite fishing, Hawaiian, or collared shirt. No suits or ties please.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
