Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Tuesday, June 16, 2026, Lois L Urban, 84, loving wife of 51 years to the late Dr. Emil Urban.
Surviving family members include her daughter: Kristine Glenn (Mark); granddaughter: Amanda Glenn; brothers: Alan Lee (Margie) and Jay Lee (Nancy); sister-in-law: Jeanne Lee; nieces and nephews: Alison, Ben Lee (Kelly), and Ryan Lee (Sam). In addition to her husband, Mrs. Urban was preceded in death by her parents: Bob and Vi Lee and brother: John Lee.
Born September 26th, 1941. A native of Manitowoc, WI, she graduated with a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1964. Married to Emil Urban in 1963, their first date was a trip to observe the Greater prairie chickens of Illinois on a cold, wet, early morning. She was a world traveler who lived in Ethiopia for 10 years (1964-1974), where her daughter was born. While living in Ethiopia, she traveled across Africa, alongside Emil as he gathered data for his “The Birds of Africa” anthology, which she compiled and edited entirely.
She was a life long learner with an avid curiosity for all subjects, but especially nature, language, medicine, geography, and genealogy. She was a longtime active member of the Philomathic Club of Augusta, where she moved in 1976. Known amongst friends, neighbors, and colleagues as an elegant cook and generous hostess, she used recipes and techniques from across the globe. She also kept up correspondence with friends and family near and (very) far, preserving and sharing their stories.
Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2006, she was an ambassador for PD awareness, scientific literacy, and active involvement in one’s medical journey. She always sought to understand her disease and spread awareness about it to other PD patients, medical students, doctors, and anyone else. She lived on her own terms and was able to see out the rest of her life at home, facilitated by the compassionate care of Carol Crabb, Lynn Thigpen, and Georgia Hospice Care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson’s Foundation, Michael J. Fox Foundation, or World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The visitation will be held Friday, June 19, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907 (706) 364-8484. Please sign the guestbook at www.thomaspoteet.com
