Jeffrey Carl Shurtleff Sr., Esq., age 82, passed away on May 29, 2026. He was born on December 11, 1943, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Colonel Carlyle Shurtleff and Mary Jane “Tommy” Shurtleff.
Jeff lived a remarkable and wide-ranging life shaped by service, travel, education, career, and family. With his father serving as a Colonel in the U.S. Army, Jeff and his sisters grew up in many places, including Taiwan, San Francisco, Alabama, McLean, VA, and Paris. While living in Paris, he graduated from Paris American High School and developed a lifelong love of photography, often riding through the city on his Vespa taking photos.
Jeff received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, from which he graduated in 1966 before beginning his service in the United States Army. His Army career included time with the 82nd Airborne Division and service in Vietnam with the Signal Corps, where he worked in aviation logistics and communications support. During his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
After leaving the Army in 1970, Jeff moved to Santa Monica, California, to continue his education in professional writing at UCLA. He later earned his law degree from the University of Georgia and settled in Augusta, Georgia, where he became a respected bankruptcy attorney for more than 30 years.
It was in Augusta that Jeff met the love of his life, Judy Croft Shurtleff, at Forest Hills Racquet Club. From that meeting grew a beautiful marriage and a life filled with love, laughter, and family. Together, they made Augusta their home, where they raised three children and built a life centered on the people they loved most.
Jeff is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Judy Croft Shurtleff; his children, Britt (Noah) Davidsohn, Jeffrey (Georgia-Rae) Shurtleff Jr., and Jonathan (Julianna) Shurtleff; and his grandchildren, Jonathan Shurtleff Jr., Jackson Shurtleff, Eloise Davidsohn, Callahan Shurtleff, and Margaux Davidsohn.
He is also survived by his sisters, Holly Shurtleff, Alison Clark, and Cheryl Shurtleff. He was preceded in death by his parents, Colonel Carlyle Shurtleff and Mary Jane “Tommy” Shurtleff, and his sister, Gini Shurtleff.
Jeff was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He will be remembered for his intelligence, humor, independence, love of reading and film, and the remarkable life he lived across the world before making his lasting home with his family in Augusta. His family is grateful for the love, stories, and memories he leaves behind.
Services will be private.
